June is packed on the Salmonberry Trail!
We’ve got guided hikes, volunteer trainings, a Wheeler work party, a solstice gathering at Kilchis, and even a hike-and-wine day at Nehalem Bay Winery.
An 82-mile multiuse trail that will be a generational treasure for Oregonians
Written by Isabel Max | photography by Salmonberry Trail FoundationThrough forest draped in thick fog, rust-orange rails guide me forward, narrowing to a point 20 meters ahead. I hike on an abandoned railroad, first laid in 1911 by Japanese, Irish, Swede, Austrian, Greek, Russian, Bulgarian and Norwegian immigrants, now a ghost in a filigree frame of overgrowth. Between the ties, diverse mushroom species grow.
Join Us for a Salmonberry Trail Happy Hour at Breakside Brewery
The Salmonberry Trail community is getting together for a casual happy hour at Breakside Brewery in Slabtown on Wednesday, May 27, from 5–7pm, and we’d love to see you there.
This is a chance to meet other Salmonberry Trail volunteers, supporters, and curious new folks who want to learn more about the work underway to build the 82-mile Salmonberry Trail.
Why Rail-to-Trail Works in Rural Oregon
Rail-to-trail projects are not a new idea in Oregon. They are one of the most reliable tools rural communities have used to support small businesses, extend visitor seasons, and improve daily quality of life.
They work because they fit the scale and rhythm of small towns like ours.
A helpful comparison exists just inland.

A Full April on the Salmonberry, and a Strong Start to May
April was a big month on the Salmonberry Trail, and it carried right into May.
We spent the month out on the trail, in community spaces, in training rooms, and in conversation with partners and supporters. We wrapped up April with a guided hike to Nehalem Falls on April 26, where a small group got to explore one of those tucked-away places that feels both remote and somehow quietly generous. We also held our first Forest Bathing Guided Hike Experience on April 25, which felt like an important widening of the circle, not just hiking for distance or destination, but time to slow down, notice, and be in the landscape a little differently.
The Salmonberry (Trail) is Blooming
By: Lynnee Jacks
If you’re feeling restless and uncertain about the state of things, take a walk. Listen to the birds and let it rain a little on your bare skin. Take off your shoes, even. You’ll quickly remember that nothing ever stays the same for very long.
Volunteer Spotlight: Ken Wenzel
Some folks are happy to lend a hand. Others become part of the backbone of the work. Ken Wenzel is one of those people. Based in Cedar Mill, Ken serves on the Planning and Construction Committee and as a trail lead, and he has gone above and beyond again and again to help move the Salmonberry Trail forward.

What Is The Trail Development Fee?
As part of our lease agreement with the Port of Tillamook Bay, the Salmonberry Trail Foundation pays a Trail Development Fee of $5 per linear foot for every section of trail we build and open to the public.
This fee directly supports the Port as both landowner and long-term partner in making the Salmonberry Trail a reality. It helps cover the Port’s ongoing role in managing and stewarding the corridor as it transitions from rail line to public trail.
Our 2024 Annual Report!
As a small organization with a big vision, we are surrounded by so many amazing people striving to make the world a better place. This past year, working together, we refined our priorities to focus on the essentials and strengthen our partnerships. This enabled us to work more collaboratively, succeeding where before we had failed, helped us overcome unexpected challenges, furthered our plans for four new trail segments, and strengthened our broader trails and recreation community.
Protecting the Dairy Creek Trestle
Video from the trail.
We’ve been making important progress on the work needed to protect the historic trestle over Dairy Creek — a key piece of the future Salmonberry Trail. This effort wouldn’t be moving without the dedication of Mark Turner, the support of Public Coast Farms, and the steady leadership of our board chair, Tim Schallich.
