November 30 Trailhead Clean-Up Recap
Report & Photos By Susan Watt
This after-Thanksgiving clean-up went exceptionally well! Eight participants joined the project, which commenced promptly at 9 AM. By 11 AM, the trailer was filled to the brim with blackberries.
Next, the amazing volunteers began cutting into the wall of blackberries to the east of the trailhead to reveal the culvert. Uncovering what lies beneath those berries is always an exciting adventure! The crew discovered three culvert sections and an exceptionally old Chevy Malibu! These three culverts have diameters of 43 inches and lengths of 17 feet, 20 feet, and 24 feet, respectively.
We unearthed more woody debris in another area, including wood pallets, plywood, and additional tires. So, our work is far from over, and the trailer will undoubtedly be required again. We will need specialized equipment to remove the culverts and Chevy.
Among the volunteers were three individuals who had been interested in Salmonberry for some time, but this was their inaugural volunteer experience on the trail. It was wonderful to welcome these new volunteers to the project!
