As someone who has invested in this work, I wanted to share a few of the opportunities currently in front of us.
Building an 82-mile trail isn’t one project. It’s hundreds of individual steps. Some involve engineering or permitting. Others prepare us for future construction or help us respond quickly when new opportunities arise.
Below are three of the projects currently seeking philanthropic partners. If one speaks to you, I’d be happy to talk more about it.

Building a Trail One Milestone at a Time
The Salmonberry Trail is being built through an extraordinary partnership.
State agencies steward the corridor. Local governments lead projects within their communities. Engineers, planners, tribal partners, volunteers, businesses, and nonprofit organizations all contribute their expertise.
The Salmonberry Trail Foundation exists to help bring these efforts together and provide the private support that enables the work to move forward.
Building public infrastructure is a long process. Projects move from ideas to studies, from studies to engineering, from engineering to permitting, and from permitting to construction. Each step makes the next one possible.
Public agencies are excellent at funding projects that are ready to be built. Private philanthropy makes them ready.
That is where the Trail Catalysts make the greatest difference, creating momentum where it matters most and ensuring opportunities are not lost simply because the next step could not be funded.
Current Catalyst Projects
Opportunity One: Help Open the Williams Creek Crossing
Williams Creek is one of the most exciting places along the future Salmonberry Trail.
The historic rail bridge has the potential to become one of the trail’s signature crossings, connecting visitors with the forest while creating a destination all its own.
The next step is completing the technical work needed to move the crossing toward construction.
Current Goal: $65,000

Opportunity Two: Create Oregon’s First Learning Mile
The Learning Mile will transform a section of trail near Williams Creek into an outdoor classroom where students, families, and visitors can experience the forests, rivers, history, and ecology that make the Salmonberry unique.
Working with educators, historians, and tribal partners, this project will develop interpretive experiences that make the trail more than a place to walk or ride.
Current Goal: $35,000
Opportunity Three: Keep the Trail Moving
Some of the most important work on the Salmonberry isn’t visible.
Engineering, permitting, grant matches, unexpected opportunities, and building partnerships, to name a few.
Responding when a project is suddenly ready to move.
The Trail Ready Fund gives the Foundation the flexibility to keep momentum going instead of waiting for the next funding cycle.
Three-Year Goal: $1.5 million
Annual Investment Goal: $500,000
This fund supports the people, planning, and readiness that make every other project possible.
